PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

I welcome Club Members and prospective members to the site of the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs.  This site is provided so that members can get updates on what Oregon Club Women are doing in their local communities.  This site is also provided for prospective members to learn about the Oregon Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs is the oldest Woman’s Club in existence and has provided work in local communities throughout the United States and also is a solid foundation for women in the World.

In Oregon women have been involved in their local communities for years working to keep their communities going.  Some actions that they have accomplished are: Building the first libraries in Oregon, helping to get the Legislature to build the Oregon State Library.

History abounds with women working towards getting the right to vote.  To working on keeping our communities clean, by supporting the 40 hour work week to also providing help with some of the first domestic violence centers built in Oregon.  With their help we now provide a chance for women from Latin America to come to an Oregon College to complete their Master’s Degree.  We also help by providing help to a student from Oregon to go to Latin America to complete their Master’s Degree.  High School Seniors are provided a chance to compete for scholarships in Vocal, Instrumental, Fine Arts and an Essay Contest.  One winner in each category is awarded a scholarship each year.  Women in Oregon sit on the Sadie Orr Dunbar Scholarship Committee for Nursing which is run by the Oregon Lung Association.

These are just a few of the things that Oregon Club Women are doing in Oregon.

Each administration the State President chooses a project.  For 2008-2010 as the State President, I have chosen Animals in Therapy.  This project encompasses so many lives.  Dogs and cats are used in Nursing homes, dogs are used in Service to help others get around.  There are ranches that help the handicap, mentally challenged or those in a time of need.  Each and every aspect of a person’s lives can be benefited with the help of these animals.  This is a very special project for me and I know that Club Women in Oregon have worked hard in supporting this project.

For those of you who are already members, I hope that you see that your work in your local community has sincerely helped others as well as provided you an avenue for your volunteer work.  For those of you who are looking for an avenue to expand your volunteer work, we would love to hear from you and hope that you would consider joining this very worthy organization.

We have an opportunity for prospective members who are currently in Middle School and High School through forming a Juniorette Club.  These clubs work hard to support their local woman’s club and learn how to become a volunteer.

After being a Juniorette there are two forms of clubs, Juniors and General Clubs.  Junior Clubs usually consist of members under the age of 40 who feel that they are working on areas of concern for their generation.  Oregon currently does not have any Junior Clubs as all those Clubs became General Clubs.  General Clubs work in their community and each has their own project.  These also are governed by the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

For more information, please take the time to review this website as well as the GFWC.org website.  I hope that you enjoy the journey and hope that if you are currently not a member that you will consider membership in this wonderful fulfilling organization.

HEATHER THOMAS, State President 2008-2010
